The next walk will be this Thursday (28th May) with a look at the village of Skelton and some of the surrounding countryside. The length is 4.73km (2.9 miles) on a mixture of village roads, country lanes, footpaths and a little rough pasture. It is gently undulating, total ascent 57m. There is one stile, picture below. Do not be put off! I managed perfectly well by sitting on the lower step and easing backwards under the bar, so anyone 1m78 or less in height should have no problem. There were inquisitive cattle in one of the fields when I did the recce, but they were not a problem.

The forecast is for very sunny day, pleasantly warm in the morning, gentle breeze from the south-east, and a small chance of rain.

We will meet at 10.30 at outside the Cross Keys in Carleton at 10.30am to sort out transport. In Skelton there’s plenty on-street parking on the road to Ellonby (CA11 9SE, postcode for the Dog and Gun). Lunch will be at the Upfront Gallery in Unthank (CA11 9TG).

If you wish to come please reply to this email so that I have some idea of numbers.

Extract from the Convenor’s Handbook

Members of U3A participate at their own risk.

• Walkers/members should be confident that the proposed route is well within their physical capabilities — even if the weather deteriorates.

• Walkers/members should be properly equipped, with suitable footwear, waterproofs and a picnic. A hot drink is a good idea in winter.

• The route will have been researched by the leader, but changes may need to be made on the day if weather conditions change.

No one in the group has been trained as a leader or in first aid. In an emergency, help will be given to the best abilities of fellow members. Members should consider carrying a first aid kit for their own use.
