Our u3a Folk Music Group is opening up the group to singers, as well as instrumentalists.  They will still be playing a tune or two, but will be 'songs heavy', and hope to attract non-instrumentalists.   All singers will be very welcome. You don't need to play an instrument or read sheet music (we will be working from sing lyric sheets).  If you would like to hear more about this come along to the u3a Open Day on 27th November from 10 to 12.  at Penrith Rugby Club.  Or contact Neil Stretton - neiljstretton@outlook.com    Mobile - 07986 214541

The group meets at Cliburn Village Hall on the 1st & 3rd Thursday's in the month (10.00 to 12.00)

"Penrith U3A has been running a Folk Music group for many years.  Initially, it was simply a 'tunes' group, aimed at (folk) instrument players of more than basic ability - and playing (mainly traditional) folk tunes from sheet music.  We had guitars, fiddles, flutes, accordions, concertinas, melodeons & whistles, even a piano.  A couple of years ago, a few players left and the remaining members decided to make it a more inclusive group, by bringing songs into the mix, playing a wider range of folk music, with some more contemporary material (including songs from the 60's & 70's) and not making it necessary to read music.  That change was quite successful and we had about 15 members, including singers and players of instruments such as ukulele, banjo, drum & harmonica.  Those numbers have tailed off a bit recently and we are keen to bring new members in.

We meet at Cliburn Village Hall on the 1st & 3rd Thursday's in the month (10.00 to 12.00).  We always have a tea, coffee (and biscuits) break, with a chance to chat about folk music (and other things !).  We ask for a small contribution towards Hall hire costs and refreshments - but it is only a pound or two.

We would like to welcome any Penrith U3A member who thinks they would enjoy singing and/or playing Folk music.  You can pop along to Cliburn to listen to us first, or just call in on our morning session and join in.  Or get in touch with me, Neil Stretton (contact details below), if you've got any questions."
