2nd and 4th Wednesdays in each month

I am writing to you on behalf of Penrith Mountain Rescue Team to thank for your recent donation of £113.As you know we receive no government funding and it is donations such as yours that enableus to keep people safe on the fells and the wider area 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We are currently raising money for a new Base and also need repairs to the roof of our existing building. Your donation will help us in achieving both of these goals. Regards and best wishes to you from all at Penrith Mountain Rescue Team.

Hi all,  The weather is looking ok, sunny and cloudy .

Meet at the Cross Keys at  9 15 for a car share.

Directions A66 from Penrith towards Keswick at Threlkeld, take the left turn for St Johns in the Vale (B5322) follow this to the A591 turn right for Keswick, in 1/4 of a mile park on the roadside where you can, near the left turn to High Bridge end Campsite CA12 4TG, and Thirlmere (road Closed). Meet at 10.10am, at the bus stop nearby on the right, heading for Windermere, to catch the bus, so bring your bus pass if you have one. - map 90 OL 5, 315195 ; what3words - factored.lame.risking  (if you download the free app, you can put this in and click navigate).

The plan is to Catch the bus from Legburthwaite Bus stop to Wythburn Bus stop and walk back, there are some great views along the way.

The route is on paths and quiet roads, 6.5 miles miles, 550 feet of ascent and descent. I will shorten the walk if the weather turns nasty.

If this is your first walk, you might want to bring a flask and something to eat, plus a sit mat.

I hope to collect £1 for Penrith Mountain Rescue.

Just a polite note, can we please stay together and not lose contact with the leader, and also we need to have a volunteer of a back marker for each section, so no one gets left behind, thank you.

Refreshments afterwards I am planning to call at the Base camp for tea on the way back.

If you car share please offer a few quid or buy tea and cake, parking, otherwise it could be a long walk home!

If anyone wants to run a walk or has an idea just ask.

Remember to carry emergency contact details

Let me know only if you are coming - and only by email.

Check email on the morning of the walk.

U3A has a no dog policy.

Next walk on the 22nd of April.

Hi all,

I have been looking at other campsites but haven't yet found anything that meets our varied requirements, so I am proposing that we return to Herding Hill Glamping site again, as we had such a great time last year and there are still plenty of new walks to do.

For those who didn't join us last year, our glamping site near Haltwhistle, https://www.herdinghillfarm.co.uk/  has a selection of pods, (some with loos), plus limited camping, caravan and camper van pitches.  (See email chain below for prices/accomodation options.)   It also has full facilities.

I am looking at the following dates: June the 22rd to the 25th - three nights on site and leaving on Thursday.

Let me know what you think.

I am planning to do a short walk on Monday and longer walks on Tuesday and Wednesday.  We are handy for the Hadrian's Wall bus so we can walk new stretches of wall and/or field paths in the Haltwhistle area.   It's a good site for evening get-togethers and there is a BBQ hut to hire, if the weather is not too good.  (Vindolanda, The Roman Army Museum, and a large visitor centre are all within close proximity if the weather isn't great for walking. Haltwhistle is also on the Carlisle - Newcastle railway line.)

Get booking as the site fills up - if you book let me know, and put a note on the booking page that you are with Penrith U3A MWG.

The normal Wednesday walk will still be within driving distance for the day, and there is plenty of other accommodation in the Haltwhistle area if Glamping etc is not for you

Please see the response below on current availability at Herding Hill.

Regards,

Brian
